The Isle of Man is a self governing British Crown dependency of which Queen Elizabeth II is the head of the state and who is represented by a Lieutenant Governor. The High Court of Tynwald is the Parliament of the Isle of Man, the Parliament is over 1,000 years old and is considered to be the oldest continuous Parliament in the world.

The Island is not part of the United Kingdom, but external relations, defence, and ultimate good-governance of the Isle of Man are the responsibility of the government of the UK.
